Thank you to the officers who defended the Capitol

Officer Brian D. Sicknick died protecting the Capitol. I have not seen memes endorsing his sacrifice from either left or right.

I fear the left is too angry at his superiors (who decided Capitol Police would be understaffed and under-equipped for the long-telegraphed violence), too angry at his co-workers (some of whom appeared to endorse and facilitate the violence), and too distraught at the apparent double-standard applied to policing dark-skinned liberals versus light-skinned conservatives.

I fear conservatives are frustrated that he didn't join the MAGA rioters, some of whom carried "thin blue line" flags.

I will thank him though:

Thank you, Officer Sicknick, for doing your job, risking yourself to uphold your oath.

Thank you also to all the other officers who risked injury to clear multiple bomb threats and angry, armed rioters from the Capitol. And thank you to those who are investigating and arresting all those responsible for the violence, threats, and vandalism.

I suspect if we were to meet, we would have many points of deep political disagreement, but understanding each other is going to be necessary to heal the country. Understanding the complexities of human interaction and politics will be necessary for the United States to continue. I want that to happen. I want to have those discussions.

Help me break down stereotypes and build better ones to replace them.
